You’ll take a brief online assessment consisting of clinically derived questions that ask about how you are doing and your reason(s) for seeking sports performance coaching. After completing the assessment, you will receive an email with next steps provided. Next steps will include a a One Health representative contacting you to facilitate your registration and set up your initial appointment. One Health employs a thoughtful matching process, by which you’ll be linked with a sports performance coach whose skill set fits best with your described needs.
A formal contract exists between the University of Missouri and One Health LLC, not between the student-athlete and their sports performance coach. However, yes, an informal agreement will be considered between each student-athlete and their coach. This agreement will revolve around scheduling appointments, keeping scheduled appointments, arriving on time for sessions, and committing to the sports performance coaching experience.
One Health’s sports performance coaching model calls for 3 sessions initially. The three initial sessions focus on engagement, connecting, understanding wants and needs, goal development and setting, strategy identification and implementation, and review. You and your sports performance coach will determine how often sessions occur. There is no predetermined frequency. How often you meet with your sports performance coach is up to you and your sports performance coach. Sessions can occur once or twice each week, once every two weeks, or according to some other agreed upon frequency based on your needs.
Sessions run for 30 minutes and are paid for in advance by the University of Missouri.
The first session gives you, and your life coach, a chance to get to know one another and develop a plan of action. It also gives you a chance to decide if you think life coaching and the life coach with whom you were linked is a good fit for you.
Absolutely. Consider the major issues you’re dealing with and the challenges you need to overcome. Understanding the areas, you’ll want to focus on will give your sports performance coach a general idea as to where to begin. Sessions are controlled by you. Meaning, it is up to you, as the client, to determine what you want to discuss each session. Most sessions are a continuation of the previous session and together you and your sports performance coach will build on strategies developed based on results from having implemented them.
Your sports performance coach must be contacted within 24 hours of the scheduled session. An email describing the need to cancel will be sufficient (see email below).

With sports performance coaching, you are in the lead. You let the sports performance coach know the areas in your life you need to work on in order to thrive socially, emotionally, academically, or athletically. Therapists are often looking for a problem and diagnose clients. Coaches do not look for problems or label clients. With coaching, you will be encouraged to focus on your potential in the here and now.
One Health’s belief is that anyone can benefit from working with a sports performance coach, and some people will need therapy in addition to sports performance coaching. Therapy is conducted by licensed mental health professionals who are trained to treat clinical challenges such as depression, anxiety, and other emotional disorders. Sports performance coaches work on non-clinical issues such as personal and sport-related growth and performance, academic success, relationship discord, grief/loss recovery, and financial well-being, to name a few.
You can think about the difference between an ophthalmologist and an optometrist. An ophthalmologist can diagnosis eye diseases and treat them surgically if needed (Therapy). An optometrist helps maintain the eyes so that they continue to stay healthy and have good vision (Coaching). Sports performance coaches help maintain good mental health and wellness towards individuals and teams thriving personally and athletically.
One Health is not a crisis resource. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please go to the nearest emergency room or contact a local emergency response line.
For whatever reason, you feel your One Health sports performance coach is not a good fit, your sports performance coach will help you transfer to another coach. Every situation is different, and it is best to have a discussion with your coach, but steps will be taken to support your desire to change. If necessary, One Health offers a sports performance coach Supervisor whom you may contact. Each One Health sports performance coach is certified and well trained, however, to maintain organizational integrity and to keep performance levels high, a supervisor supports the work of each sports performance coach.
